Man United summer transfer target being frozen out, World Cup place in doubt: report

Manchester United and Chelsea target Toby Alderweireld fears he is being frozen out by Tottenham Hotspur, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 29-year-old was apparently dropped from the Spurs squad without explanation over the weekend, and that has put his Belgium World Cup place in doubt, with Roberto Martinez saying that he has to be playing regularly if he wants a place aboard the plane to Russia.

Apparently, his failure to agree upon a new contract is why Spurs have decided to drop the centre-half, which makes complete sense. Why play a footballer who may well leave in the summer, when you’ve got talented stars who can fill in for him.

From a United standpoint, though, it’s good news that he isn’t playing at present as that’ll only drive him closer to the exit door.

Defensively, United have been pretty abject this term and it’s an area of the field that certainly needs work. In my opinion, Alderweireld would be the perfect partner for Eric Bailly, with the Belgium international bringing that experience and calmness to the table.

Whatever the cost I’d certainly urge the Red Devils to get this deal done if it’s a possibility because it’s tough to find proven, world-class defenders with Premier League experience.
