It’s fair to say that David de Gea is probably enduring his worst spell within professional football.
The superstar Spaniard has been struggling massively over the last month, with mistake-after-mistake costing his team dearly.
His latest, most costly error came at home to Chelsea, with De gea allowing Marcos Alonso to tap-in at his near post after spilling the ball right to his Spanish compatriot.
That didn’t stop De Gea fronting up to his mistake, though. According to The Sun, ‘gutted’ De Gea apologised to his teammates at half-time, holding his hands up to the costly error while letting an expletive leave his mouth in the process.
After the game, apparently the 28-year-old got changed quickly and headed home, as he understandably furious with himself after making another high profile mistake.
It’s a tough situation for the club. We’re talking about without doubt our best performer over the last half-decade. I guess it sums it up perfectly that even he is making costly errors.
This season is lost but we must continue to back our man if we want any chance of keeping him at Old Trafford in the long-term. Let him play out the season, hopefully, the faith Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shows in him will persuade the Spaniard to stick around. I’m not holding my breath, though…
