Man United have apparently added young midfielder Ilaix Moriba to their list of transfer targets.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has turned Manchester United’s situation around. The vibe around Old Trafford is now one of positivity going into a new season.
The Red Devils have made some good signings at both first-team and youth level. The Baby Faced Assassin is no doubt doing his utmost behind the scenes to add more faces to both squads.
Over the last couple of days, a new name has been added to the mix; Ilaix Moriba.
According to reports from Spain, namely from Fichajes, with the translation coming via the MEN live blog, United have already made their move.
Apparently, the Reds have already tabled a £17.1m (€20m) offer to sign the emerging 18-year-old, who made a first-team breakthrough at FC Barcelona last season.
The ongoing fallout at the Nou Camp could see a number of players leave this summer, with United looking to take advantage of that by signing midfielder Moriba.
Whether or not Moriba is someone who could come in and make an impact straight away remains to be seen. You’d imagine that, despite his 18 senior appearances last season, he’d probably slot in with the U23s at first if this move does happen.
United have adopted this cautious approach when it comes to young players and that’s definitely one I like. Why risk putting added pressure on these young men, when they have their whole careers ahead of them?
Moriba wouldn’t be alone in switching Spain for Old Trafford, with both Marc Jurado and Alvaro Fernandez doing the same last summer. Both impressed at youth level last season. Both will be vying for places in the senior squad this time around.
As is always the case with these young players, you never know how quickly they’ll develop – or whether they’ll develop at all. A £17million outlay on an unproven teenager would be a serious show of faith but as of now, we have no reason to doubt Solskjaer as he’s been brilliant in the transfer market.
