Manchester United Football Club has been built upon developing youngsters and giving them first-team opportunities.
From Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson, it’s the foundation, the heartbeat, the life and soul of Old Trafford. Credit where it’s due, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to keep that mantra alive.
Amongst the biggest prospects at United recently is Angel Gomes. The mega-talented Englishman has a contract that expires at the end of this month, with all roads pointing to the teenager leaving on a free transfer.
That was until this morning, when The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell offered United a boost in regards to Gomes. Apparently, talks with the 19-year-old are ‘edging towards a new deal’ with the Reds looking to give the player £25,000-a-week.
After making his debut as a sixteen-year-old a few seasons ago, we’ve seldom seen Gomes since. He had an excellent pre-season tour before the 2019/20 term but failed to impress on his limited opportunities since.
Right now, I remain on the fence as to whether Gomes has the attributes to make it at the highest level. I’d imagine United find themselves in a similar boat, as they’re seemingly willing to overpay on Gomes – just incase he does fulfil potential…
