The rumours linking Man United with a possible move to sign Frenkie de Jong aren’t dead just yet…
Not too long ago, we were led to believe that a Manchester United move to sign Frenkie de Jong was all but dead in the water. In fact, the news came from the man himself, with the Dutchman admitting he’d prefer to stay at FC Barcelona.
The Old Trafford club seemingly aren’t giving up that easily, though. Perhaps they’ve been told by Nou Camp sources that the midfielder may still be available. After all, Barcelona are cash-strapped. They’ll have to sell players before they can buy.
Maybe De Jong is someone they’re looking to cash in on, purely due to the pretty sizeable price he’d command. The Catalan outfit also know that there would be ample interest in the midfielder who has already worked with Erik ten Hag at FC Barcelona.
TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook has the latest news for us – and it’s a pretty significant update.
He claims that United’s talks with the 25-year-old ‘seem to be accelerating’, though Crook also stated the fact that De Jong still wants to stay at Barcelona.
On top of that, Crook adds there are ‘clear links’ between Ten Hag, United and De Jong.
This would be a nice little piece of business if United could somehow get it over the line. However, I’m still super doubtful about De Jong’s willingness to play for United.
If the player has absolutely zero interest in making the move to Old Trafford, United’s pursuit of De Jong should stop there. Why waste time, effort and potentially an awful lot of money on someone who is not all that bothered about playing for this club?
I also believe there’s a good chance United would find it tough to fight off other potential buyers. No doubt other European heavyweights, likely with Champions League football on the table, would make their moves for De Jong.
