Manchester United Football Club are in an absolute mess at the moment. Top players are leaving and others are yet to sign new deals. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a major headache, but the squad overhaul has to start somewhere.
On the final day of the season we were treated to a glimpse into the future with Mason Greenwood making his eagerly anticipated debut. The 17-year-old was probably the best player on the pitch against Cardiff City, although United aren’t rushing to hand him a new deal.
According to The Sun, Greenwood currently earns £50,000-a-year and is expected to be a ‘major part’ of the squad next season. However, the Reds aren’t willing to give him a new contract until he turns 18 – as they don’t want a repeat of the errors they made with both Federico Macheda and Adnan Januzaj.
The club will wait until October (his Birthday month), and see how he develops before giving him big-money terms. Understandably, United are now taking a cautious approach after being burnt in the past.
Greenwood looks a real classy footballer. He could well be someone United can build their team around in the future, but we need to allow him to develop at his own pace and I like this decision by United.
