Manchester United’s squad is in need of major overhaul. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need to be given time.
For me, the Red Devils’ biggest area of need is centre-half. Victor Lindelof aside, United have no reliable options. Although that could be about to change in the not too distant future.
In an exclusive from The Sun, United are among the admirers in the running to sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur. The 30-year-old centre-half has a release clause in his contract, meaning any club can buy him for just £25million.
Apparently, the Reds will decide on whether to move for Alderweireld next week – although Solskjaer would prefer it if United retained their current crop of centre-backs, allowing him to use his coaching ability to turn their form around…
Honestly, I’m not sure whether they deserve yet another opportunity. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have been struggling for years under four different managers, while Marcos Rojo is constantly injured.
The only one I’d be willing to give another chance to is Eric Bailly. The Ivorian is brilliantly talented but he has been unlucky with injuries over the last season or two. I’d give him one final opportunity to prove his worth, but the rest just aren’t good enough.
As for Alderweireld, it goes without saying that he’d be a massive upgrade on what we have. For just £25million it seems like a no-brainer and I’m surprised that Solskjaer isn’t keen on moving for the Spurs man.
