With Antonio Valencia leaving Manchester United on a free transfer, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gets the opportunity to choose his first permanent captain.
If I’m being brutally honest, I just don’t see many leaders within that dressing room. However, it seems as though the Baby Faced Assassin has made his decision.
According to ESPN, Solskjaer is set to offer the captains armband to Paul Pogba – in an effort to convince the midfield superstar to stay at Old Trafford.
It wasn’t that long ago when Jose Mourinho took the decision to strip the vice-captaincy role from Pogba, but Solskjaer is clearly intent on giving the 26-year-old his power back.
Honestly, though, I’m not convinced that the thought behind it is right. If United are purely giving it to Pogba to ensure he stays around, I have my doubts.
I was already worried about his suitability to a leadership role. He’s hardly someone who has taken the game by the scruff of its neck since coming back to United – and I’ve never seen him bark orders at his teammates.
To me it feels like a last-ditch effort to try and keep Pogba around but I doubt it’s going to work. The best talents want to be playing Champions League football while winning trophies on an annual basis. United cannot offer him either of those things at this point.
