Man United are set to make another move to acquire Antony from Ajax.
Erik ten Hag’s summer transfer window feels like it’s up in tatters right now. The club have failed to deliver the Dutchman his top targets, with the Red Devils constantly left frustrated.
There’s no doubt that at the start of the window, Ajax winger Antony was amongst Ten Hag’s biggest priorities. The Brazil man was proving hard to acquire, with the Eredivisie club setting a huge asking price to let their winger depart.
That deal was described as ‘completely off the agenda’ not too long ago. However, United have not completely given up the chase.
It’s Sky Sports News’ Dharmesh Sheth with the scoop, who states that United will present Ajax with a ‘massive offer’ for Antony, in a last-ditch effort to sign the 22-year-old.
As to what that fee is, we’re not quite sure. It’s probably above the £60million mark – but whether that’s enough, remains to be seen.
Antony is someone who has worked with Ten Hag previously. That combination flourished over in Holland, so it makes sense for United’s new boss to try and reunite with the winger who contributed directly to 22 goals last season.
Whether Ajax are willing to sell, particularly after already losing Lisandro Martinez to United, is another question entirely. The Dutch club are pretty likely to dig their heels in and ask for even more money, in the event that they’re forced to sell another top asset.
What leaves me frustrated is that United could have made this ‘massive offer’ weeks ago, rather than wasting time chasing second and third-rate targets. But I guess that’s normally how it has gone during this current regime.
