Manchester United’s defensive line has been hit and miss all season. A failure to sign a centre-half last summer probably cost Jose Mourinho his job.
Now, though, it finally looks as though the Red Devils are ready to right those wrongs, thus backing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the process. According to a Sun exclusive, it is being claimed that United are set to trigger Toby Alderweireld’s £25million release clause.
The 30-year-old Belgium international has a clause in his contract which activates this summer, leaving him available to purchase for an extremely low fee given the current market.
Although The Sun does add that United are yet to contact Spurs, but it shouldn’t be a problem given they simply cannot say no if the clause is activated.
United’s biggest area of need is a new, experienced, reliable centre-half. Alderweireld is exactly that. The Spurs man has Premier League minutes under his belt, he knows how this league works and he could slot into the team as soon as he walks through the door.
Simply put, United should move on this deal as soon as they’re physically able to do so. It’d be the perfect start to a huge transfer window for United. Solskjaer can only take this current squad so far, he needs massive financial backing.
