Manchester United are in a real mess. I think it sums the situation up perfectly that Marcus Rashford is delaying on signing a new long-term deal at Old Trafford.
Rashford’s got just a year left on his deal, although the club does have the option to extend his terms for a further twelve months if they so choose. In today’s Sun on Sunday, it is being claimed that United are set to trigger that one-year extension within the 21-year-old’s contract.
Apparently, they’re doing that, amid exit fears, to stop any plans of an immediate exit for Rashford.
The star striker is apparently aware of his importance to the Red Devils and the ball is in his court. He could either walk away for nothing, or make United sweat – thus offering him more money in the process.
United are set to activate the extension before the end of the month, before ‘thrashing out’ further talks with the boyhood United fan over a new long-term contract.
All this does is buys United some extra time. Understandably, the club want to keep their #10 here in the long-term but you can also get why Rashford is having doubts about committing himself to a club who have been in gradual decline recently.
For what it’s worth, I think a deal will get done eventually. Rashford loves United like each and every one of us – and the opportunity to try and take the Red Devils back to where they belong is probably too good to turn down. It goes without saying he’ll be rewarded handsomely in terms of weekly wage…
