Just a few days ago, we covered a story from The Mirror in which it was claimed that young defender, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, faced an uncertain future at Manchester United.
Well, that air has definitely been cleared. According to the Manchester Evening News, United have triggered a one-year extension in the 22-year-old’s deal, despite the Dutchman having not played for the Reds since May 2017.
A loan move to Fulham got Fosu-Mensah back on track following being frozen out by Jose Mourinho – that was until injury struck and ended his campaign early.
He’s only just returned to training at United, though it seems as if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ready to see what he’s made of.
Whether or not we see Fosu-Mensah in competitive action this term remains to be seen. However, the versatile star is probably targeting a return to action during pre-season tour (whenever that may be).
As for his long-term future, who knows? He’s still a super-talented young man, though I worry that injuries have already derailed his career too much. Plus, the competition at United is pretty fierce right now.
At the very least, United are protecting their asset. Fosu-Mensah may well command some sort of transfer fee if the Reds decide to move him on. Given his relatively low wages, it’s definitely worth the gamble…
