Man United rejected the opportunity to sign Georginio Wijnaldum this summer.
It goes without saying, this transfer window has been nothing but an abject disaster for Manchester United Football Club. It’s a crying shame, as the summer actually started pretty well.
You got the feeling it all hinged on a move to sign Frenkie de Jong. That one now looks dead in the water. Now, the Red Devils are floundering. The panic has absolutely set in, with Erik ten Hag’s team being linked with what can only be described as second-rate options like Marko Arnautovic and Adrien Rabiot.
I get that you have to weigh up other targets. It’s just the manner in which it was happening. Sky Sports News’ Kaveh Solhekol has now linked the Red Devils with a move to bring in another name; Georginio Wijnaldum.
However, according to the usually reliable journalist, Ten Hag has ‘turned down the chance to sign the Premier League proven midfielder this summer.
Apparently, the Dutchman has now agreed to join AS Roma and link up with Jose Mourinho, though before that move went through, United were given the chance to make their move. It’s claimed that Ten Hag ‘didn’t want him’, though the player ‘was willing’ to move to Old Trafford.
“Also, I’ve been told that Ten Hag turned down the chance to sign Gini Wijnaldum from PSG.” Solhekol said live on Sky Sports, per The Express.
“We saw last week that Gini Wijnaldum has agreed a deal to join up with Roma and Jose Mourinho.
“I’ve been told that United were offered the chance to sign the player, who has won the title with Liverpool and Champions League.
“But Erik ten Hag didn’t want him, even though the player was willing to move to Manchester United.”
This one is interesting. Ask any Liverpool fan. They’ll tell you how important Wijnaldum was for their success. This guy is a winner.
Sure, Wijnaldum may not be the most spectacular player to watch stylistically, but you can be damn sure he’d be a direct upgrade on Fred and Scott McTominay. The fact that he has played in this country before is just a bonus.
I’m somewhat surprised that this is a move Ten Hag never seemed keen on. The Dutchman has been linked with fellow players from back in his homeland due to their familiarity and fit within his system. Wijnaldum would’ve slotted seamlessly into our team.
However, we have to trust the manager. Ten Hag is a player who knows exactly what he wants. If Wijnaldum doesn’t fall in line with that, I guess the search goes on…
