Manchester United Football Club are still lacking in depth in some key areas, out wide being one of those positions.
Marcus Rashford has that left-hand flank on lockdown, though over on the opposite side, the chopping and changing between the likes of Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard just doesn’t cut it at the highest level.
Seemingly, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified that area as one that could do with strengthening, which is backed up by the constant Jadon Sancho links.
Another name rumoured to be amongst consideration by the baby Faced Assassin is Federico Chiesa. Well, Quotidiano Sportivo, translated via Sport Witness, offered us another update on his future – and it’s certainly interesting…
According to their report, United have been ‘active’ in their pursuit of Chiesa. Suddenly, the Reds have gained ‘pole position’ in the race to sign the Italian.
Furthermore, United are ‘very close’ to meeting the club’s demands for the 22-year-old attacker, while a fee of £53.4m (€60m) could be enough to get the deal done.
In terms of competition, there is some interest from Italy’s big guns, though as of right now, QS rate United’s chances at landing Chiesa as 50/50.
Again, it’s pretty obvious what Solskjaer is trying to achieve. He’s looking to get younger at several key positions, trying to build a side that can compete for a decade as opposed to a season or two.
Chiesa is amongst the most talented up-and-comers in the Serie A and he’d improve any squad in world football. However, if there’s any chance we can still sign Sancho, I’d much prefer us to go down that route.
As a back-up option, though, United could do far worse than Federico Chiesa…
