Man United have their sights set on Cody Gakpo, in an effort to bolster their attacking options.
Manchester United’s start to the season has been the most disappointing of my lifetime. It’s a shame really, because Erik ten Hag seems like a manager who can get the best out of this squad. Sadly, the Dutchman is working with one hand tied behind his back.
Players have been sold or released. Though they’re yet to be replaced. We’re into the final fortnight of the transfer window. It’s time to panic.
Antony seems to be the top target out wide, though Cody Gakpo is another possible option.
The latest update in the Gakpo saga comes from The Mirror, who state that United ‘want’ the 23-year-old, in an effort to add ‘more firepower’ to the team.
PSV Eindhoven will not entertain selling Gakpo if they qualify for the Champions League this season. They take on Rangers in Glasgow on Wednesday, with the tie level at 2-2 after the first leg.
Gakpo, who is the reigning Dutch Footballer of the Year, is rated at £35m. He wants the chance to play in the Premier League, with United ready to ‘step up’ their interest after PSV’s Champions League fate has been decided.
I’m getting major Memphis Depay vibes here. Gakpo comes from the same club, plays in a similar style and comes with similar hype. I guess what Gakpo has going for him is that he’s a little older with more experience under his belt.
However, the price tag looks identical and he’d obviously be moving to the same club as Depay did. I don’t doubt that Ten Hag has done his research though, and he must truly believe Gakpo is someone who can improve this United squad. Heck, I’d take anyone right now.
