Manchester United need to sign at least one new midfielder this summer. Somewhat alarmingly, that’s probably the position I’ve seen us linked to least thus far.
Anyway, one name that has cropped up before is Ivan Rakitic. Again, the Croatia international finds himself rumoured with an Old Trafford switch.
The story comes from Sport, translated via The Metro, who state that United have made an approach for the 31-year-old Rakitic, who they want to sign.
Apparently, the 20-time Premier League champions are that keen, they’ve told Barca to ‘name their price’, while the story also claims that the Catalans are willing to sell Rakitic during this window.
Rakitic is happy at the Camp Nou, hence why Sport claim that United would have to significantly improve his weekly wage in order to tempt the midfielder into a switch to Salford Quays.
United are aware of his demands but the deal hinges entirely on the player, who has been told his contract at the Camp Nou will not be improved.
Rakitic would be a superb signing, albeit only in the short-term. He’s a wonderful dictator of play and the way he can control the tempo is supremely impressive. There is concerns that he’d probably only be at his peak for a year or two, though, and United would then have another gaping hole to fill once again.
With that in mind, I believe United would prefer to move for someone who can fill that void in the long-term…
