Man United are looking set to bring Dominik Livakovic to Old Trafford.
Manchester United certainly have a goalkeeping dilemma on their hands. Do they stick with what they know in David de Gea? Who has been a great servant despite mistakes? Or move onto something new?
Well, several shot-stoppers have been linked with replacing De Gea as the number one, including Brentford’s David Raya.
Over the last 24 hours, Croatian media have thrown a new name into the mix; Dominik Livakovic.
It’s Jutarnji with the claim. Thanks to Sport Witness for the translation. According to their report, United ‘want to bring’ the 28-year-old to the club.
Livakovic currently plies his trade for Dinamo Zagreb and the Croatia national side.
The Reds are ‘ready to pay’ a release clause which stands at €10m (£8.8m), with the outlet adding that their sources have ‘solid foundations’, and the transfer being ‘quite possible’ to take place.
Livakovic had a brilliant World Cup over in Qatar, which no doubt heightened transfer interest in the experienced goalkeeper. With such a low release clause and what you’d expect to be decent wage demands, this feels like an astute piece of business if United do pull it off.
If the club don’t want to gamble on selling De Gea, why not have Livakovic compete with the Spaniard? No doubt the Zagreb man would be happy, at least in the short-term, playing second fiddle if that was to be the outcome of the battle for the number one jersey.
For what it’s worth, I can absolutely see this move happening. I don’t expect to see Dean Henderson return to the club this summer, so United will have to dip their toes into the shot-stopper market in some way, shape or form.
