Man United want to sign Ivan Rakitic, willing to pay over £30m: report

With Ander Herrera leaving Manchester United, while Marouane Fellaini also left in January without a replacement being signed, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to acquire a new midfielder.

Although this summer has been filled with links to young players, it seems as though United want that wise-old head in the middle of the park. According to Duncan Castles in the Daily Record, the Reds are ‘working on a deal’ to sign Ivan Rakitic.

FC Barcelona are open to selling the midfielder, although they value him at €55m (£48m). Although he turned 31 in March and his better days are probably behind him, his physical condition is impressive – with United willing to spend ‘over £30m’ to sign the Croatia international.

Rakitic is a leader. He can control the game from the middle of the park due to his on-ball ability and sheer talent. There’s no doubt he’d be a brilliant signing for United – but you have to be somewhat concerned about his age.

Signing older players hasn’t worked for United recently, but they do need someone who can come in and make an impact both on the field and in the dressing room. As a stop-gap while developing a youngster, Rakitic could be an astute signing.
