Man United could make a move to sign Sunderland goalkeeper, Anthony Patterson.
Manchester United Football Club have found some stability in the goalkeeper position in the form of Andre Onana. The man from Cameroon is now proving his worth at the start of the 2024/25 campaign.
However, Erik ten Hag is keen to keep his number one shot-stopper on his toes, by bringing in more competition for the starting job.
According to The Sun, United are ‘watching’ the 24-year-old Sunderland first-choice keeper, Anthony Patterson. In their headline, they state that the Reds are plotting a ‘shock transfer raid’ to sign the Championship player.
United want a young keeper who can act as an understudy for Onana, with Patterson ‘firmly’ in the sights of the Old Trafford club.
With Altay Bayindir hardly getting a look-in, there’s a chance the man from Turkey will move on, which does explain why the Reds are now interested in acquiring Patterson, who has acquitted himself well with the Black Cats.
First and foremost, you’d imagine a move does depend on Altay moving on, while then United would have to gauge whether Patterson would be content with playing a back-up role at the Theatre of Dreams. Let’s be honest, it’d take a crazy situation to unfold for the Englishman to become the first-choice starter for the 20-time Premier League champions.
It’s always a tricky situation and it’s why the back-up goalkeeper position is consistently changing. There’s only so long that players are content with sitting on the bench for – and it seems as though Altay’s patience is wearing thin, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a new number two goalkeeper at the club next term.
