Man United are considering making a move for FC Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie de Jong.
Erik ten Hag’s Ajax won the Eredivisie title last night, with the Dutchman moving to Old Trafford in the good books of the club.
Now, the hard work for the 52-year-old really begins. He’ll understand that this squad is in need of major overhaul. That’ll start with a mass exodus, with several players leaving on free transfers.
Over the last 24 hours or so, there have been pretty big rumours in regards to Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman could well be on his way out of FC Barcelona this summer, with United looking at this as a possibility.
Now, according to the Manchester Evening News, United are weighing up a move to acquire De Jong.
The midfielder would not come cheaply, with the fee of around £75million being touted by the report.
What’s interesting is that the MEN claim the 25-year-old has been identified as the ‘ideal target’ for Ten Hag, who worked with De Jong before the player moved to FC Barcelona.
United have suggested that reports claiming a deal is ‘imminent’ are way off the mark, though the Red Devils do want to move ‘swiftly’ in an effort to sign a midfielder. That’s due to the impending departures of both Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.
De Jong is under contract at Barca for the next five years, though the emergence of Pedri and Gavi in midfielder makes the Dutch midfielder somewhat expendable. At the right price, the Catalonian club are willing to sell this summer.
I’d expect United may well have their work cut out in pursuit of De Jong, though. The clubs will start lining up to try and sign De Jong. He’s just too good to fall into our hands and without Champions League football on offer, we may well struggle to make this deal happen.
