Man United weighing up move to sign Jan Oblak

Man United could move to sign Jan Oblak, as David de Gea’s contract continues to wind down.

It goes without saying, David de Gea has undoubtedly been the best servant at Manchester United for the last decade. The Spaniard has always shone when the club needed him the most. He deserves credit for that.

However, you get the feeling that his value at Old Trafford is rapidly dropping. Erik ten Hag has a set way of playing. I think it’s fair to say De Gea’s strengths do not play to Ten Hag’s…

It’s why Martin Dubravka was brought in. It’s also why Dean Henderson could still potentially have a future at the Theatre of Dreams. Simply put, a new goalkeeper is going to be needed in the not-too-distant future…

Enter, Jan Oblak.

We’ve been here before. The Atletico Madrid man has often been linked with a potential Red Devils switch. Perhaps this time, it makes less sense. Let me explain why…

It’s AS with the claim, with thanks to the MEN Live Blog for providing the translation. They link United with a move to bring in the Slovenian.

Apparently, United are ‘watching’ the player’s situation, as they consider a move to sign the top-class 29-year-old as a replacement for De Gea.

The Spaniard’s current deal expires next summer, with United ‘unsure’ about triggering the clause in De Gea’s deal, which would allow the Reds to extend that contract by a further twelve months.

Putting it bluntly, De Gea’s wages are not cheap. However, I’m not sure Oblak is the right fit.

OTF’s verdict

Oblak is a brilliant keeper within his own right. One of the best in the world no doubt.

However, if you’ve ever watched him play, you’ll know that Oblak’s game is also not built on playing out from the back. He is equally poor with the football at feet.

I still think United would be far better suited by going after someone who fits the system first and foremost. Who that keeper is I’m not so sure right now…

Do you think a Man United move for Jan Oblak would make sense? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
