Man United ‘well placed’ to sign Saul Niguez: report

Man United are once again being linked with a move to sign Saul Niguez.

Perhaps an attack-minded midfielder is the least of Manchester United’s concerns at this point. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek to call upon. All can fulfil that role excellently.

That’s why the story from yesterday’s Marca (print edition), translated via Sport Witness, has us scratching our heads.

Apparently, Saul has not changed his mind about leaving Atletico Madrid despite winning La Liga this summer. He’s ready to start a new adventure elsewhere, though understandably, his current club need an ‘important amount’ to sell the Spaniard.

Saul’s current contract doesn’t expire until 2026. There’s also a massive €150m release clause in that deal, so he certainly won’t come cheap.

With that said, it’s claimed that United are ‘well placed’ to sign the 26-year-old, before adding the Reds have ‘always been interested’ in Saul.

Sport Witness state that this feels like Marca relaying information from British reports as a way of trying to jolt United into action. After all, Atletico need money and parting with a prized asset would generate significant funds.

In a world where money is still tight for all clubs, due to a lack of fans in stadiums over the last year or so, this feels like the icing on top of the cake rather than the cake itself.

There’s no doubt Saul is an incredible player. I’m just not sure he’s the right fit for United at this point in time. Sure, if Pogba leaves, then this would be an avenue worth exploring. Right now, though, I’d much prefer to see us sign a top-class centre-back or more defensive-minded midfielder.
