Manchester United Football Club will be in the hunt to sign Jadon Sancho over the summer, Fabrizio Romano claims.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are still in the title race despite a poor result last time out. However, you still get the impression that this squad is still a few players away from being long-term contenders.
Amongst the problem positions is right-wing. Sure, Amad Diallo has been added this month, though it remains to be seen whether he’ll deliver the goods at first-team level.
The long-term target for the Red Devils has been Jadon Sancho. A long saga over the summer resulted in the Englishman remaining at Borussia Dortmund, though Reds interest is still there…
That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside. Romano claimed that he’s ‘sure’ United will be in the race to sign the exciting 20-year-old over the summer.
As the top Italian journalist claims, it remains to be seen whether United will move for a winger, but Sancho, understandably, would be the top priority.
Check out what Romano had to say here:
“For sure Manchester United will be in the race,” Romano stated. “We will see whether he will be the priority. If they have to sign a winger they will go with Sancho because he is the main target, and they have an agreement with the player.
“Sancho was prepared to join Manchester United (last summer), they had an agreement on a contract, his agents had an agreement with Manchester United. It was close to being completed but then they had problems with Borussia Dortmund as we know.
“Next summer the situation will be different because there’ll be a race with other clubs. Last summer it was Manchester United and Sancho and no more. Now we’ll see if other clubs join the race. At the moment I don’t have any names ready to pay this amount – €120m – but we are in January…we’ll see in March when clubs start to move for big targets.
“I’m sure Manchester United will be in the race because if they wanted to sign another winger – they had the chance to sign Dembele for €80m – but they prepared to save the money and go next summer for a winger.”
I would imagine no final decision will be made until Solskjaer gets a real look at Diallo in action. Sure, he’s talented, but who knows whether he’s ready to play Premier League football week-in-week-out?
Then there’s the question of transfer fee. If Dortmund are still insisting on not letting Sancho leave for anything less than £120million, I’m not sure he’ll be going anywhere in summer 2021 either. Simply put, in these COVID-19 times, no club can afford to splash that kind of money on one player…
Don’t get me wrong, I’d be delighted if United managed to sign Sancho, though the Old Trafford club should never overpay for anyone.
Now, we wait and see if Solskjaer decides to reignite interest in Sancho with a formal bid when we get closer to the summer…
