Man United will have to ‘break the bank’ to sign Cody Gakpo

Man United have been warned they’ll have to spend huge money to sign Cody Gakpo.

The Manchester United and Cody Gakpo rumours are now cropping up with more frequency. These stories were pretty common over the summer as the transfer window wore on, but in the end, the Red Devils decided not to move for the Dutchman.

That’s perhaps a decision Erik ten Hag is deeply regretting right now. Gakpo is having a brilliant World Cup for an impressive Netherlands side. That transfer fee is rising.

It’s journalist Sebastien Denis with the latest information on Gakpo. He tweeted that United are ‘not letting go’ of Gakpo.

However, the club will now have to ‘break the bank’ to sign the 23-year-old, with PSV demanding more money in terms of transfer fee. The whispers over the summer suggested somewhere around £30m would have been enough. Now, the Eredivisie side are after €75m (£65m)…

Gakpo’s fantastic start to the league season for PSV, coupled with his World Cup exploits, mean he’ll now cost double the amount that was originally discussed. If I were United, I’d still do it.

Gakpo is incredibly versatile. Not only is he capable of leading the line at the highest level, he’s also more than adept at playing off either wing. We all know Erik ten Hag loves that tactical flexibility.

At first, I was genuinely getting major Memphis Depay vibes from Gakpo. That’s no longer the case. The latter just feels like an infinitely better all-round footballer.

Whether or not this deal can be done in January is another matter entirely. A winter move is probably United’s best chance at getting this transfer complete, before even more potential buyers show their interest in Gakpo next summer.
