Man United will still ‘monitor’ Frenkie de Jong situation

Man United will keep an eye on Frenkie de Jong’s situation at FC Barcelona.

It goes without saying, Manchester United spent far too much time and money pursuing the unobtainable Frenkie de Jong this summer.

The Dutch midfielder’s plan was clear; he always wanted to stay at FC Barcelona, regardless of their financial woes and whatever club came into the picture to sign him.

Erik ten Hag must have been given some sort of indication that the player would at least consider an Old Trafford switch, or else United would have ended that chase weeks (if not months) earlier.

Well, the summer transfer window has just slammed shut, though Fabrizio Romano is still providing updates on that situation.

Apparently, United will still ‘monitor the situation’ of the 25-year-old, along with Chelsea, with a view to a future transfer. Although it will be ‘months’ before we’re given the next developments on this front.

Obviously, we won’t hear anything concrete until January at the earliest, though as things stand, De Jong has largely remained rooted to the bench at the start of this 2022/23 campaign.

“So far the situation is totally quiet,” Romano told CaughtOffside.

“Frenkie wanted to stay at Barca and therefore there are no immediate updates.

“Certainly Man United and Chelsea will monitor the situation but they know that De Jong only wanted Barca with great clarity all summer.

“It will take months before we understand the next developments.”

If De Jong continues to be utilised as a substitute, it’ll certainly be intriguing to see how that plays out. Does the Dutch midfielder want to try and move elsewhere to a situation where he’ll be amongst the first names on the team sheet? Or is he content sitting on the bench collecting his weekly wage?

From a United standpoint, I’d now be wary about moving for De Jong. This is a player who has already rejected us once – but also wasted precious time as he made up his mind.

The last thing United need is more players that actually don’t want to be here. At the end of the day, you look at Antony wear that badge with pride and honour. I’m not sure I want to bring in someone who isn’t totally buying into the Ten Hag system and Manchester United Football Club as a whole.
