Man United are still pushing to try and bring Frenkie de Jong to the club this summer.
We know that the transfer window hasn’t officially opened at this point, though clubs around Manchester United are already making their moves. Take Manchester City and Liverpool for instance. Both have announced signings.
Well, so far, United have been linked with several players, though there appears to be nothing imminent in regards to incoming signings.
One player that Erik ten Hag remains keen on trying to sign is Frenkie de Jong. I guess it makes sense given the pair worked together at Ajax a few years ago.
However, recent reports have suggested that De Jong just isn’t interested in the move – regardless of whether FC Barcelona have to sell the Dutchman in order to generate funds.
That said, the stories just will not go away. The latest update in the saga comes from Spanish media outlet, AS.
The story is actually mainly focused on De Jong’s time at the Camp Nou, with AS criticising the player for not taking that next step forward.
United get a mention, with AS reiterating that De Jong could be sold due to Barca’s poor financial situation.
It’s actually claimed that United are ‘willing to make’ an ‘irrefutable’ offer to sign the 25-year-old this summer, though no monetary value is given. The author also writes that Barca will ‘very seriously’ consider the sale of De Jong if that offer is actually made.
At the end of the day, nothing changes until De Jong confirms he wants the move. Manchester United should absolutely steer well clear unless they’re 100% convinced that the player wants to be here.
Time and time again, this club has been burned by buying marquee players who’re here for the money rather than playing for the badge on their chest. That’s partly why the club is struggling right now.
Then you have to factor in other potential bidders. There are no doubt Champions League sides that are far better placed to give De Jong a more tempting offer this summer.
In all honesty, my mind has been made up and it will not change. I cannot help but feel United are wasting their time on a player who they don’t really have any chance at acquiring.
