Man United ‘willing to pay’ £39m to sign Christian Romero: report

Man United are hot on the heels of Juventus centre-back, Christian Romero.

This summer could be a case of one Romero out (Sergio), and one in (Christian). That’s if the story from Aire de Santa Fe, translated by Sport Witness is to be believed.

It’s common knowledge that Manchester United’s biggest need going into the summer is a new centre-half. Raphael Varane seems to be the name that pops up most, though interest in Romero is nothing new.

Anyway, Aire de Santa Fe make a pretty big claim. They say that the Reds want a deal for the Argentine this summer, though Juventus and/or Atalanta will no doubt want to keep ahold of the young star.

Apparently, United are ‘willing to pay’ £39 (€45m) to sign the 23-year-old defender, who is currently with Argentina ahead of the Copa America.

Romero is actually owned by Juventus, though Atalanta have the option to make his current loan deal into a permanent transfer by paying more than £13m. Then, Atalanta could sell Romero for three times that amount almost immediately.

This isn’t a player I’ve seen an awful lot of, though at this point, I’d be willing to take a chance on anyone. The Red Devils are in desperate need of a top-quality centre-half to partner Harry Maguire. Maybe Romero is that man.

The talent is there as you don’t win the Serie A’s ‘best centre-back’ award without having ability. He’s also now a mainstay at the international level for one of the better sides on the globe. Make no mistake about it, Romero can obviously play, it’s just a question of whether he’d be able to adapt to the English game.

Would Romero be a good signing for Man United? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
