A Phil Jones transfer away from Manchester United may well be a genuine possibility in 2021.
The Englishman has been at the Theatre of Dreams for close to a decade now. Though after a positive start during his first two years at Manchester United, Phil Jones has become nothing-but a meme for Red Devils fans.
Well, Dean Jones’ latest Eurosport transfer column offers us the latest insight into Jones’ future. Apparently United are ‘willing’ to let the 224-appearance star leave the club. While it may surprise some, there is ample interest in the centre-half, too.
The most notable suitor is Newcastle United. According to the report, Steve Bruce and The Magpies have been making ‘checks’ on Jones’ situation, while Bruce is looking to use his relationship with Michael Carrick as an advantage.
There could be a stumbling block, though; Jones’ £80k-a-week wages at United. The good news is that there is room for negotiation around a potential fee.
Other interested parties include West Ham and Leicester City, meaning Jones does have some excellent options should he want to move away from Manchester United.
So what would be Jones’ best choice?
Well, he should be pushing hard for a move away in order to preserve his own career. It all depends whether Jones would be willing to take a pay-cut in order to find regular football somewhere else.
Again, though, it’s down to United making a rod for their own back. Why they chose to renew Jones’ contract not too long ago, knowing full well he wouldn’t feature regularly, never seemed like a smart idea.
If they can’t move Jones on, they’ve only got themselves to blame…
