Man United are still pushing to bring winger Antony in from Ajax this summer.
Thus far, Manchester United haven’t signed anyone. That could be about to change as deals for Tyrell Malacia and Frenkie de Jong seem to be progressing pretty nicely.
Another player the Old Trafford club have been heavily linked with a move for is Antony. Again, it’s another case of Erik ten Hag trying to surround himself with familiarity.
The Brazil winger impressed under Ten Hag at Ajax, with the pair both seemingly keen on a reunion at the Theatre of Dreams.
Journalist Alex Crook offered the latest update to Give Me sport yesterday, claiming that United are ‘working hard’ to sign the winger, though there’s ‘still ‘negotiating to be done’. That’s because the two teams are £20million a part when it comes to their valuation of the Brazilian.
“I know United have been working hard on Antony, but the fee that I was given was £40million.” Crook told Give Me Sport.
“I think their asking price is nearer £60million so, obviously, there’s negotiating to be done there.”
Given United have been more than willing to walk away from targets rather than overpay for players this summer, I’d fully expect this brewing Antony saga to be another that drags out.
United could be helped by the fact that Antony himself wants this move to happen. He has an excellent relationship with the Red Devils’ new Dutch manager and he’s obviously keen on following his boss to the Theatre of Dreams if at all possible.
It goes without saying, United could use some reinforcements up top. Outside of Cristiano Ronaldo, their attackers struggled for any sort of consistency in 2021/22.
There’s no doubt Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho will improve this season with proper coaching, though perhaps the addition of Antony would be the kick up the backside both need to reignite the fire in their bellies.
