Man United are working on a deal to sign Yann Sommer on a free transfer.

Not too long ago, we covered a claim which stated Manchester United wanted Yann Sommer to come in and replace David de Gea.

Erik ten Hag has a certain way of playing and perhaps the man from Switzerland falls in line with that style more than the Spaniard.

Well, the latest claim from ESPN is a pretty important one. According to the usually-reliable Rob Dawson, United are ‘working on’ a deal to sign the free agent Sommer – who is to leave his current club, Borussia Monchengladbach, next summer.

United are looking at possibly adding Sommer to the squad and will be able to make contact with his agent as of January 1st.

Ten Hag, understandably, is looking to ‘refresh’ the goalkeeping department, with Martin Dubravka set to return to Newcastle after this loan spell ends. He’s made just one appearance for the Old Trafford side so far.

Contract talks with De Gea over a new contract have yet to start. too, which raises doubts about the Spaniard’s long-term place at the Theatre of Dreams. His current terms expire next summer, though the club hold the option for a further year if they so choose.

There’s also Dean Henderson, whose future remains up in the air. He fired shots at United upon heading to Nottingham Forest on loan. So far, he’s had a mixed spell with the newly-promoted side.

Again, this just feels like Ten Hag trying to turn this dressing room into one that better fits his style of play. The experienced Sommer feels like a good short-term stop-gap, though it probably means the gaffer isn’t at all convinced by Henderson – or De Gea for that matter.
