Man United are set to give Toby Collyer a chance to earn a place in the first-team this coming season.
Manchester United are slowly getting back to what works for them – giving young players a chance to prove their skills at the highest level. Erik ten Hag has welcomed Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo into the side. Both have impressed from day one.
Pre-season is all about working out who is next in line for the opportunity. Many thought this would be Shea Lacey’s time to shine, though injury thwarted his opportunity.
Instead, it’s Toby Collyer who is making an impression. Fresh off a new contract, the young midfielder is looking right at home in the heart of the midfield during the two pre-season games so far.
Now, according to Manchester World, the talented United starlet is set to be given a first-team chance this season. Journalist Rich Fay writes that Collyer is set for opportunities after ‘catching the eye’ of the manager.
The 20-year-old is described as one of the most ‘highly-rated’ players in the United youth system right now, and he will be included in the senior squad for the coming campaign, as he looks to make his breakthrough.
It’s no secret that Collyer has looked like a real star in the making over the 90 minutes of football he’s had this summer. He’s an excellent passer of the football. Always keen to get stuck in defensively. Calm and composed even under pressure, and a real leader.
Ten Hag clearly trusts Collyer, who he handed the captain’s armband to during the second half of the game against Rosenborg last week. This is a young man with a bright future, who is now ready to make that next step.
There’s a reason why we believe he’s the long-term replacement for Casemiro in this side, though even we didn’t think it’d all happen this quickly.
Now, it’s down to Collyer to finish off the tour strongly and prove why he is an undroppable player in this United starting line-up.
