Manchester United have their first tour victory under their belt, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s new-look Red Devils side beating Perth Glory 2-0.
The plan from the off was clear – press high, win the ball back quickly and hurt the opposition with pace. The perfect example of that was new-boy Daniel James, who has settled into life at Old Trafford extremely quickly.
Our new 21-year-old winger started the game on the left, but drifted all over the front line throughout. He was even given some time specifically on the right-wing as Solskjaer looks to assess his options ahead of the serious stuff starting next month.
Anyway, following James’ mightily impressive 45-minute display, he spoke to the media and revealed his favourite position…
“For me, that left position is always my favourite position. I can play along the front three and I’m happy as long I’m playing – it’s good being able to play all three.” James is quoted as saying by The Metro.
“It’s important you’ve got to play all three and our forward players can play that. Antony played No 9 today and it’s good for us all to interlink and we swapped a few times and it’s good to play all three.”
I think that he looked right at home as a left-winger as it gives him the ability to cut in and use his excellent right-foot. However, there’s competition aplenty in that spot, hence why Solskjaer tried him over on the right.
Within the first few minutes, James had already delivered a few lovely balls into the box so I genuinely believe he’d be brilliant off either wing, but if he feels more at home playing on the left then I think that’s the way to go.
Although he can interlink and go through the middle as the main striker, I’m not sure that suits his game at this stage of his career, so for now, James should be focused on playing as a wide man.
I just can’t wait to see him in action again. I genuinely believe this lad could force his way into the starting line-up before the season starts, which is a testament to just how talented the 21-year-old is.
