Man United’s Leon Goretzka pursuit dealt blow, set to sign new long-term deal: report

Man United’s interest in Leon Goretzka could’ve just ended pretty abruptly…

It goes without saying, Manchester United’s biggest need heading into next summer is a new midfielder. Nemanja Matic is starting to show his age, while Scott McTominay cannot do it all on his own…

One man the Reds have been linked with pretty consistently is Leon Goretzka. The German midfielder had a winding down contract at Bayern Munich, leaving United with a slim chance of making a move happen.

Well, those hopes could’ve just been ended. Kicker state that Goretzka is set to sign a new contract until 2026, dealing United a major blow in pursuit of the classy 26-year-old.

If this indeed the case, then United’s move for Goretzka is 100% dead in the water. Like so many players previously, it does feel as though the Reds have been used for leverage in regards to sealing a new contract for a player at his current club.

You cannot blame Goretzka nor his agent for that, though United have been adopting the cautious approach with this one – and now we know why…

It does mean United will have to look elsewhere next summer and where that search will lead nobody knows. Declan Rice is a name that has always been linked with a United switch, though he’d cost a pretty penny.

Either way, it should be United’s main focus, alongside signing a striker who can replace Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani in the long-term.

For now, it’s up to the current crop of players to do what they can and make a serious title challenge this term. We’ve started off nicely, though there’s plenty of gams left to play.

Who should Man United target to fulfil that midfield void? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
