Defensively, Manchester United got a whole lot better over the summer. The additions of Harry Maguire, coupled with the promotion to the first-team of Axel Tuanzebe and the loan away for Chris Smalling certainly helped.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came rather close to parting with another defender, though according to Sky Sports, Marcos Rojo’s proposed deadline day move to Everton fell through due to a disagreement over the transfer fee.
Anyway, now that the dust has settled, the Argentine is feeling in a pretty good place in Manchester at the moment. He has played fairly regularly due to injuries decimating the squad and now the 29-year-old is determined to continue that trend following his proposed move to Everton failing…
“I’m happy here. I want to play; I want to be a regular,’ Rojo told The Athletic.
“My best position is a central defender, that’s where I want to play, but I’m happy to be used as a full-back too. I’m in very good condition this season. The pre-season was right and I’ve not been able to say that in other years because I’ve had injuries.
“I love it here. It’s tranquil. My daughters are fully adapted here. They speak perfect English, my family is happy here. I can speak some English too. I’ve been here in the first team for longer than any other club in my career. I’m happy, I just want to play more.
“It’s a big season for me – I want to play in the Copa America in my home country next year too.”
I guess that Rojo’s versatility has certainly played into his hands. The fact that he can play at both left-back and centre-back definitely helps as players like Luke Shaw and Phil Jones are often injured thus leaving free spots in the team.
Don’t forget that it wasn’t too long ago when Rojo was a first-team regular under Jose Mourinho. The Argentine brings that fiery South American aggression to the table and we all know he loves a slide tackle.
Who knows, if he can stay fit and get a real run in the team, his presence in the squad could feel like a new signing for the Baby Faced Assassin.
