Winger Omari Forson made his full Man United debut this weekend, though his future remains up in the air.
Erik ten Hag deserves credit for the job he’s doing amid an injury crisis. It has not been easy, though his hand has been forced, turning towards youth as Manchester United look to seal a place within the Premier League’s top four.
This weekend, it was Omari Forson’s turn. There were whispers on Friday suggesting that the London-born-attacker was set to start for the Red Devils. Those rumours turned out to be true.
Forson would start the game and last the better part of an hour. He did okay. Nothing majorly wrong. Nothing overly positive. The work ethic was there, as was the desire and drive to try and hurt Fulham’s defence. To me, he looked like a diamond in the rough. These things take time.
In the aftermath of his full debut, The Athletic (subscription required) have claimed that the 19-year-old starlet faces an uncertain future.
Without delving too far behind their paywall, Forson has a contract that expires this summer and no agreement looks imminent. He’s also attracting interest from other clubs, perhaps who could offer him senior game-time more regularly.
The problem for United here is that they’re trying to set new standards and precedents. If a competitive contract offer is on the table already, it would be wise if INEOS didn’t up that and start bowing to the demands of younger players like Forson. Obviously, you then run the risk of losing these younger talents.
A lot can happen between now and the summer, but you do get the impression that this situation is finely balanced…
There’s no doubt Ten Hag is a fan. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have selected Forson ahead of both Antony and Amad. That alone should tell you that the gaffer feels he’s the right stylistic fit for this current side.
