Manchester United’s slim hopes of claiming third spot have just dented slightly, with Louis van Gaal today confirming that the club will be without Wayne Rooney and Luke Shaw for the visit of Arsenal on Sunday.
Rooney came off at half-time in the Palace game with a groin problem, and it looks as though his season could well be over due to that injury.
Luke Shaw was also a casualty from that game, as he looked severely concussed during the first-half. Despite reports suggesting he’ll be ready to go, that seemingly isn’t the case.
These injuries provide Louis van Gaal with a slight selection problem. It probably means that Daley Blind will once again shift to the left-back spot, but with Carrick injured, there are no other senior central midfielders available.
The options available to Van Gaal would be to either recall the fit again Angel di Maria into the middle of the park, or bring someone up from the U21 group and give them their debut in a huge match.
