Manchester United have been long-term admirers of AS Roma’s Kevin Strootman, but after yet another injury setback this season, the Dutchman may not make the move to Old Trafford despite what everyone was expecting.
A new target has been unveiled by the Sun on Sunday, who claim that Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender is next up on Van Gaal’s wish list.
The midfielder is also thought to be a target for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal, but United are the current favourites for his signature after scouts of the club were spotted at Bayer’s last game during the week.
Bender would cost around £12million, but the German side are free to sell the 25-year old as they already have a natural replacement in the form of Christoph Kramer.
