Manchester United Football Club have always had plenty of money at their disposal, whoever the man in charge may be. That status in the game was cemented today by Bayern Munich’s Chief Executive, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
He has been speaking to the world’s media, and confirmed that Manchester United made a ‘mad’ offer for Thomas Muller. In which they could have secured a world-record transfer fee for the German.
“We had a mad offer from Manchester United last year, which was not a topic for one second,” Rummenigge is quoted as saying.
“We could have secured a world-record transfer fee.”
“Thomas Muller came out of it [the youth academy]. [He is] born near Munich, formed here, the hero of the fans.”
At the end of the day, that money is there to be spent and improve the playing squad. Manchester United could offer silly money to the biggest players on the planet, but it doesn’t always mean it will be accepted.
Yes, there is no doubting that Thomas Muller would have been an outstanding acquisition, but he is a Bayern Munich local lad and it was always going to be tough to prise him away.
It felt like under both Louis van Gaal and David Moyes that precious time was wasted on chasing unrealistic targets. Hopefully that changes under Jose Mourinho.
