Manchester United made the £6million move to bring in Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich last summer, with Pep Guardiola losing faith in the German. Now 31, Schweinsteiger made a great early impression at Old Trafford, but injury hampered his season.
Now the German captain is getting prepared for the European Championships, and one of his legendary compatriots in Franz Beckenbauer doesn’t reckon he is enjoying his time at Manchester United.
“He was stronger than expected in his 24 minutes against Hungary. He showed great joy of playing and also spiritual motivation. We all know how strong his will can be. We all remember his bloody face in the last minutes of World Cup final. This we will see again.” Beckenbauer said.
“Why? Because he is away from the problems at Manchester. I guess he is feeling really comfortable in the Germany squad.”
At the end of the day, whilst not being available to play, no world class footballer is going to be happy. It will have pained him every week to know that he won’t be able to take to the field, and that culminated in the likeable German missing the FA Cup final.
Obviously now that he is back playing, Schweinsteiger is going to be much happier. I don’t think these comments are worth reading anything into at all, because he has always given the impression that he has enjoyed every minute of his time at Manchester United so far.
We’ll just have to wait and see, and hopefully, he is firmly in Jose Mourinho’s plans going forward.
