Manchester United made a winning start to life under Jose Mourinho away at AFC Bournemouth, and that will have certainly got the confidence flowing. The defenders looked superb throughout that game, but now, they have some tough competition to keep their place in the side.
The man who could put them under considerable pressure is Chris Smalling, but the Englishman has had a torrid summer following an injury he picked up whilst with the national team.
Following his return to training, he was then hit with a one-game suspension at the start of this campaign for the red card he picked up in the FA Cup final, ruling him out of the aforementioned game against Bournemouth.
However, in his press conference, Jose Mourinho confirmed the news that Chris Smalling will be back in the match day squad, and is ready to play if needed.
Smalling was one of our top performers throughout last season as he really marshalled a young back four excellently. He won’t find it easy to break back in though because both Eric Bailly and Daley Blind didn’t put a foot wrong last week.
