Man United are still keen on signing Raphael Varane this summer, despite a clear difference in valuation.
Harry Maguire needs a centre-back partner. Sadly, Victor Lindelof nor Eric Bailly aren’t cutting it, with Raphael Varane the name that seems to be most linked with a potential Manchester United switch.
Earlier today, the Manchester Evening News, offered us an update on the brewing transfer saga – and it’s a pretty big one.
Apparently, United have made a £50million bid for the 28-year-old centre-half. They also state that Real Madrid are prepared to sell the player, who is in the final year of his deal.
The Spanish club are holding out for a bigger fee, £80million to be exact. As of right now, United and Madrid remain in dialogue, but understandably, United are reluctant to meet Los Blancos’ hefty asking price.
With twelve months left on his deal, it’s either sell Varane now or lose him for nothing next summer. With that in mind, they’d do very well to get anything close to £80m for the Frenchman.
There has to be some common ground here, surely? Although £50m is a more than fair offer, if United were to up that to £60m, then that should really test Madrid’s resolve. Personally, I wouldn’t go much higher than that, given he’d be a free agent in the summer of 2022.
It goes without saying, Varane would be an incredible signing if United could somehow pull it off. Though the fact that Sergio Ramos is leaving this summer makes me wonder whether Madrid will pull out all the stops to ensure they get at least another season out of Varane.
Keep your eyes peeled.
