Man United are set to announce a deal for Tom Heaton at the end of the month.
Sadly, Sergio Romero has now left Manchester United. If I had only one word to describe the Argentine, it would be reliable. The former Sampdoria man never let Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Jose Mourinho down.
The fact that it ended sourly between club and Romero will forever sting, though seemingly, United have swiftly replaced their back-up goalkeeper with a familiar face; Tom Heaton.
We’ve been covering this story for the last month or so and now we know when the deal will be signed, sealed and delivered; thanks to the BBC’s Simon Stone.
Apparently, United are to confirm the signing of the veteran at the end of the month, which is presumably likely to be at some point next week.
Heaton will come to Old Trafford initially as third-choice, with David de Gea and Dean Henderson still battling it out for the starting job.
I stand by what I’ve said before, though, I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of those two guys leave – meaning Heaton could be the number two before long.
Heaton is the perfect guy to have in and around the dressing room. He’s an experienced pro who is happy to slot in and out of the side when needed. Having that older head in the goalkeeping room is essential, as he can teach some of the tricks of the trade to the likes of Henderson and the other emerging goalkeepers at Old Trafford.
I genuinely do expect Heaton to play his fair share of games over the next season or two – and it’s really nice to see him back where it all began.
Stone also offers some information on young goalkeeper Nathan Bishop, who has joined Mansfield on loan for the next campaign.
