Chris Popov could be about to switch Old Trafford for the King Power Stadium.
Manchester United’s fountain of youth is constantly overflowing with brilliant talents. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has plenty of top-quality teenagers just waiting for their opportunity.
Sadly, though, there isn’t room for all of them. Now, it looks like forward, Chris Popov, could be out the exit door.
That’s according to Football Insider, who states that an agreement in principle has been reached for Popov to leave the Reds. Apparently, the United starlet is set to seal a transfer to fellow Premier League side, Leicester City.
Apparently, the FA Cup winners are ‘putting the finishing touches’ on a deal to sign the 16-year-old Popov following a breakthrough in negotiations.
Popov is set to sign an initial scholarship deal, that’ll turn into a three-year professional contract when he turns 17 in October.
Obviously, United had high hopes for Popov, though perhaps the young forward feels a move away is better for his development at this point in time. At Leicester, he’ll initially link up with their U18s squad, before being phased into the U23s at some point in the not too distant future.
Seemingly, that jump up in age group will happen quicker with the Foxes than it ever would with United, which is probably why Popov has jumped at the chance to move on.
It’s claimed by FI that United have offered new terms to the youngster, who enjoyed a trial at Leicester City last season. However, a potential permanent move to Leicester has turned his head.
Understandably, it’s tough to know how quickly each individual player will develop. So although it’s sad to see Popov leave, we have to hope his development goes well. Who knows, we could see him back at the club in the future…
All the best, Chris!
