Manchester United Football Club are always linked with the biggest of names when it comes to transfers, and that has been no different under Jose Mourinho. The self-proclaimed Special One made some big signings last summer, and maybe we’ll see the same again in a few months.
One of the players we’ve recently been linked quite heavily with a move for is Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid. The 25-year-old has long been touted with a move to Old Trafford, and it would be an insanely good piece of business if Jose Mourinho could somehow pull it off.
Now current Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has had his say on the situation, and the Argentine has admitted that Griezmann does indeed have a termination (release) clause in his contract.
“Yes, because there is a termination clause. There is no security,” Simeone is quoted as saying by Spanish media outlet AS, translated by The Metro.
“That’s what he told me (last year) – if you stay, I’ll stay.”
“And I said yes, why would I not stay? And they began to work with the representatives for everything that had to be signed. And he stayed.”
“And from now on I do not know what can happen. He would never let me tell him to stay. I did not do it with [Diego] Costa or [Radamel] Falcao.”
At this point in time, player power is really prominent in my opinion. Even if there wasn’t a release clause in Griezmann’s contract, if he wanted to leave, I’d imagine he would get out sooner or later.
The ball really is in the player’s court right now, and if a club does decide to meet the clause, then there is absolutely nothing the club can do about it. Obviously, Madrid would want to keep hold of their star man who has given them so much joy over the last few seasons, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Griezmann move on this summer; be it to Manchester United or elsewhere.
