Manchester United and Jose Mourinho plotting huge defensive overhaul: report

Manchester United are looking to recruit an entirely new defensive line, as Jose Mourinho plans a huge squad overhaul in the summer. That’s according to the excellent Sunday Times.

The gaffer believes that the Red Devils’ progression, both domestically and on the continent, has been held back due to the poor options he has in the defensive third of the field, and clearly he wants that addressing in the summer.

Two names mentioned in the article are FC Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti, and Alex Sandro, who plies his trade for Juventus in the Serie A.

Eric Bailly is brilliant, but he certainly needs a world-class partner alongside him. Sure, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof are viable options, but neither are that elite level that’s required.

Then you have Sandro, a Brazilian left-back. It’s obvious to me that Mourinho doesn’t fully trust Luke Shaw, hence why Ashley Young has been our starting left-sided defender for the majority of the season. Sandro would be a sensational addition, who’d improve us both defensively and offensively, which is all you can ask for.

Unfortunately, I still think that there is too much work to do in just the one transfer window, and don’t be surprised if it takes Mourinho another summer after this before we’re firing on all cylinders in the Premier League and Champions League tournaments.
