Manchester United are set to go head-to-head with Liverpool to sign Italian starlet, Nicolo Barella, according to Corriere dello Sport, translated by the Manchester Evening News.
The 20-year-old currently plies his trade for Cagliari in Serie A, with the Italy U21 international recently signing a new long-term contract with the club.
However, the Red Devils, along with Liverpool and Juventus, are keen on acquiring the central midfielder who has scored two league goals this season.
Bringing in Barella wouldn’t be cheap though, with Cagliari wanting around £44million to let the starlet leave the club, which seems expensive given his age at this point in time.
With Jose Mourinho at the helm, I highly doubt we’ll see a move for a youngster, particularly one so costly as this. We all know the self-proclaimed Special One loves the ready-made player rather than nurturing and harnessing a young talent, but we’ll just have to see how this one plays out.
Personally, I don’t know an awful lot about Barella, but with both Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick out of contract in the summer, United definitely have to bring in at least one central midfielder when the off-season comes around.
