Manchester United boss explains why he benched key pair

Manchester United’s Louis van Gaal made a bold decision over the weekend, dropping two of his regular first-teamers after they under performed for Holland over the international period. That selection was justified as United won the game 3-0 and put in a convincing performance.

Van Gaal said: “[My selection] is dependable on the game plan, it is dependable on the qualities of the opponents, which players I want to select for the lineup and also dependable on the defeat of the Dutch team.”

It was probably fair that Memphis Depay was benched based on Manchester United appearances alone, and sitting out the 21-year old for a game or two certainly wouldn’t have been the worst idea anyway.

Daley Blind on the other hand can count himself unlucky, he has been in superb form all season-long for club, but confidence will certainly be low after his country were dumped out of the European Championships.
