Manchester United chose not to sign Mesut Ozil due to underrated rising star: report

Manchester United chose not to sign Mesut Ozil due to the fact that they had Jesse Lingard ready to play in the #10 role.

That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, per The Metro. The report says that the form from the Englishman convinced Jose Mourinho not to move for the immensely gifted German; a player whom the self-proclaimed Special One worked with at Real Madrid.

Honestly, this tells you just how good Lingard has been this season. In the season’s previous, there has always been somewhat of a doubt surrounding his ability to perform week-in-week-out, but he’s proving huge amounts of people wrong this term.

His movement is probably the best within the Manchester United squad, and the intelligent runs he makes carves out opportunities aplenty for his teammates. I don’t say this lightly, we’re truly lucky to have him and call him our own.

You also have to factor in age. Lingard is five years younger than Ozil, and although the latter is the superior player, you have to consider systems and tactics. I don’t think there are many players more suited to a Mourinho team than United’s #14.

It’s also worth noting that Ozil has since penned a new deal at The Emirates.
