Manchester United have been dealt a huge blow in their pursuit of Arsenal centre-back Thomas Vermaelen, as Barcelona have made a £10million bid for the 28-year old, according to Sky Sports News. The Belgian centre-back is looking likely to leave The Emirates this summer, despite being club captain.
Barcelona are currently in pole position for his signature, as they look to replace the Catalan legend Carles Puyol after he retired at the end of last season. However no move has yet gone through, and Manchester United remain in the running.
Louis van Gaal is renowned for having at least one left-footed centre-back across his defensive line, and someone with the Premier League experience of Thomas Vermaelen would be an excellent addition to the current squad.
Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are all young defenders who are still learning their trade, and if we want to persist with the back five formation, then experienced additions are definitely whats required.
