Manchester United dealt blow in pursuit of striker as they are no longer favourites

Manchester United are no longer favourites to sign FC Basel striker Breel Embolo. That’s according to the usually reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, who says that Schalke 04 in Germany are now leading the race.

Di Marzio says that Manchester United have held talks with Embolo’s agent, whereas Schalke have spoken to the club as well – meaning they are now the frontrunners for his signature.

It wouldn’t bother me all that much if United didn’t sign Embolo this summer. He’s young at nineteen and doesn’t have the best goals to game ratio. It’d also mean a reduction minutes for the likes of Marcus Rashford, who I’d much prefer to see given regular playing time.

When you factor in the possibility that Zlatan Ibrahimovic also looks like he could be on his way to Manchester United, a move for yet another forward just wouldn’t make much sense at all. It certainly feels like that money could be much better spent in other areas of the field.
